GILROY, CA (CBS SF) — A dog inside an SUV that was stolen in Gilroy was found dead when the vehicle was discovered days later in San Jose with the dog still inside, according to police.

Michael McVey said his Nissan Pathfinder stolen from a Walmart parking lot in Gilroy on February 23 with his 15-year-old female Akita, Keiko, in the back seat.

Four days later, the San Jose Police Dept. called McVey and told him his SUV was found abandoned at another Walmart in San Jose – but the dog he raised since it was a puppy was found dead in the back seat
